Ljowa Frenkel was born in 1929 in the Lithuanian city of Kovno. His mother, Hilna, died only four years after his birth, leaving him with his father, the radio engineer Lasar Frenkel. In late June 1941, the German Wehrmacht occupied Kovno. Ljowa Frenkel and his father had to move into the ghetto. The food ration here amounted to about 700 calories per day.
