Eljasz Waltman

Eljasz Waltman wurde 1872 in Radom, einer polnischen Stadt südlich von Warschau geboren. Er war Fuhrmann von Beruf und lebte in der Industriestadt Lodz. Im Frühjahr 1940 richteten die deutschen Besatzer dort ein Ghetto ein, in dem alle jüdischen Bewohner von Lodz interniert wurden, unter ihnen auch Eljasz Waltman. Die Lebensbedingungen im Ghetto waren katastrophal, täglich fielen hunderte Menschen dem Hunger und zahlreichen Krankheiten zum Opfer. Am 30. Dezember 1941 starb Eljasz Waltman in einem Ghettokrankenhaus an den Folgen der Auszehrung. Er war 69 Jahre alt.

Eljasz Waltman was born in 1872 in Radom, a Polish city south of Warsaw. He was a coachman by trade and lived in the industrial city of Lodz. In the spring of 1940 the German occupying authority set up a ghetto there, into which the Jews of Lodz were forced to move, including Eljasz Waltman. The catastrophic conditions in the ghetto, the constant hunger and rampant disease, claimed the lives of hundreds of people each day. On 30 December 1941 Eljasz Waltman died in a ghetto hospital of consumption. He was 69 years old.
