Uri Lipschitz

Uri Lipschitz wurde 1930 in der litauischen Stadt Šiauliai geboren. Er wuchs mit einem fünf Jahre älteren Bruder heran. Seine Mutter Ester war Lehrerin und Direktorin eines Gymnasiums, sein Vater Mordechai war Hauptbuchhalter und Produktionsleiter der bekannten Leder- und Schuhfabrik Frenkel. Im Juni 1941 besetzte die deutsche Wehrmacht Šiauliai. Uris Vater gelang es, seiner Familie Arbeitsplätze in der Lederfabrik zu beschaffen, was ihnen zunächst das Leben rettete. Auch der elfjährige Uri leistete drei Jahre lang Zwangsarbeit für die Besatzer. Im Juli 1944 wurde er mit seiner Mutter in das Konzentrationslager Stutthof verschleppt. Dort starb er während der Todesmärsche im Januar 1945. Uri Lipschitz war 14 Jahre alt.

Uri Lipschitz was born in 1930 in the Lithuanian city of Šiauliai. He had a brother who was five years older. His mother, Ester, was a teacher and headmaster of a secondary school; his father, Mordechai, was the chief accountant and production manager of the well-known Frenkel leather and shoe factory. In June 1941 the German Wehrmacht occupied Šiauliai. Uri’s father managed to get jobs for his family in the leather factory, which saved their lives at first. For three years, starting at the age of 11, Uri also worked as a forced labourer for the occupiers. In July 1944 he was deported with his mother to the Stutthof concentration camp. He died during the death march from the camp in January 1945. Uri Lipschitz was 14 years old.
