Mordechaj Mazo

Mordechaj Mazo wurde 1880 in der heute weißrussischen Stadt Borisov geboren. Er war Direktor der Wilnaer Truppe, einer bekannten Theatergruppe, die Stücke in jiddischer Sprache aufführte. Für die Theatergruppe inszenierte er nicht nur Stücke, sondern übersetzte auch Werke bekannter Schriftsteller ins Jiddische. Ab Herbst 1940 musste Mordechaj Mazo im Ghetto von Warschau leben. Dort organisierte er weiterhin Theateraufführungen für die etwa 350.000 Ghettobewohner. Mordechaj Mazo starb während des Warschauer Ghettoaufstandes im Frühjahr 1943 unter unbekannten Umständen.

Mordechaj Mazo was born in 1880 in the city of Borisov, today in Belarus. He was the director of the Vilna Troupe, a well-known group of theatres that featured works in Yiddish. Not only did he produce plays for the group of theatres; he also translated works by well-known writers into Yiddish. In the autumn of 1940 Mordechaj Mazo was forced to live in the Warsaw Ghetto, where he continued to organize theatre performances for its approximately 350,000 inmates. Mordechaj Mazo died during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in the spring of 1943, under unknown circumstances.
