Zahnärztin ermordet 1943 in Warschau/Warszawa

Zofia Binsztejn wurde um 1898 in Bielsk-Podlaski geboren, das heute in Polen liegt. Sie zog nach Warschau, wurde Zahnärztin und heiratete. Im September 1939 besetzte die deutsche Wehrmacht Warschau. Bald darauf errichteten die Besatzer ein Ghetto. Dr. Zofia Binsztejn wurde als eine von wenigen Frauen Mitglied des Judenrates und dort Direktorin der Gesundheitsabteilung. Auf ihre Initiative hin wurde das chemisch-bakteriologische Institut gegründet, das unter anderem Lebensmittelproben und die im Ghetto erhältlichen Impfstoffe analysierte. Im Januar 1943 deportierte die SS Zofia Binsztejn in das Vernichtungslager Treblinka. Auf dem Weg dorthin nahm sie sich mit einer Überdosis Morphium das Leben.

Zofia Binsztejn was born in around 1898 in Bielsk Podlaski, now in Poland. She moved to Warsaw, became a dentist, and married. In September 1939 the German Wehrmacht occupied Warsaw. Soon thereafter the occupying forces established a ghetto. Dr. Zofia Binsztejn became one of the few women appointed to the Jewish Council, directing its health department. On her initiative, the Chemical Bacteriological Institute was created; among its tasks was to analyze food samples and vaccines available in the ghetto. In January 1943 the SS deported Zofia Binsztejn to Treblinka extermination camp. On the way there, she took her own life with an overdose of morphine.
