Boena Pinhas

Boena Pinhas kam 1917 als Tochter von Isak und Tamara Pinhas im griechischen Saloniki zur Welt, einer Stadt, die wegen ihrer großen jüdischen Gemeinde als „Jerusalem des Balkans“ galt. Im April 1941 eroberte die deutsche Wehrmacht Saloniki. Die deutsche Verwaltung gaukelte den jüdischen Bewohnern im Frühjahr und Sommer 1943 vor, dass sie in der Nähe der polnischen Stadt Krakau zur Arbeit eingesetzt würden. Alle Juden mussten deshalb Bahnfahrkarten dritter Klasse erwerben. Die Züge fuhren jedoch in das Vernichtungslager Auschwitz-Birkenau. Wahrscheinlich wurde Boena Pinhas gleich nach ihrer Ankunft mit Zyklon B ermordet. Sie war 26 Jahre alt.

Boena Pinhas, the daughter of Isak and Tamara Pinhas, was born in Thessaloniki, a Greek port city that was called “Jerusalem of the Balkans” due to its large Sephardic community. In April 1941 the German Wehrmacht conquered Thessaloniki. In the spring and summer of 1943, the German administration led the Jews of Thessaloniki to believe they would be sent to work near the Polish city of Cracow. All Jews were thus forced to buy third class railway tickets. But the trains actually took them to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. Boena Pinhas was probably murdered upon arrival with Zyklon B poison gas. She was 26 years old.
