Matilda Benmayor

Matilda Benmayor wurde 1915 als Tochter von Abraham und Rachel Hagouel im griechischen Saloniki geboren. Sie war mit Moise Benmayor verheiratet und hatte einen kleinen Sohn namens Jacob. Im April 1941 eroberte die deutsche Wehrmacht Saloniki. Ein Kunstraub-Kommando plünderte sofort die 500 Jahre alten Literatur- und Kulturschätze der jüdischen Bevölkerung aus Bibliotheken und Synagogen. Ab März 1943 begannen die Deportationen in das Vernichtungslager Auschwitz-Birkenau. Die Fahrt dorthin dauerte in der Regel neun Tage. Matilda Benmayor kam am 20. April 1943 in Auschwitz-Birkenau an und wurde nur wenige Stunden später mit dem Giftgas Zyklon B ermordet. Sie war 28 Jahre alt.

Matilda Benmayor, the daughter of Abraham and Rachel Hagouel, was born in 1915 in the Greek city of Thessaloniki. She was married to Moise Benmayor and had a son, Jacob. In April 1941 the German Wehrmacht conquered Thessaloniki. A unit, charged with aquiring art works, immediately looted the 500-year-old Jewish literary and cultural treasures from libraries and synagogues. March 1943 saw the start of deportations to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp. The journey usually took nine days. Matilda Benmayor arrived on 20 April 1943 in Auschwitz-Birkenau and was murdered only a few hours later with Zyklon B poison gas. She was 28 years old.
