Jona Fogel

Jona Fogel wurde 1888 im ostgalizischen Stanisławów geboren. Er war Bauingenieur und mit Fania Fogel verheiratet. Im Sommer 1941 übernahm die Wehrmacht die im Südosten Polens gelegene Stadt von verbündeten ungarischen Truppen. Umgehend begannen SS und Gestapo mit der Verfolgung der 40.000 Juden von Stanisławów. Jona Fogel war von nun an gezwungen, eine Armbinde mit dem Davidstern zu tragen und in einem Ghetto zu leben. Durch Erschießungen und Deportationen in das Vernichtungslager Bełżec ermordeten die Besatzer zehntausende Juden. Die genauen Umstände des Todes von Jona Fogel sind nicht bekannt.

Jona Fogel was born in 1888 in the east Galician city of Stanisławów. He was a civil engineer and was married to Fania Fogel. In the summer of 1941 the Wehrmacht took over this city in southeastern Poland from its allied Hungarian troops. Immediately, the SS and Gestapo launched repressive measures against the 40,000 Jews of Stanisławów. Jona Fogel was now forced to wear an armband with a Star of David and to live in a ghetto. His life there was marked by hunger, epidemics and hard labour. The occupiers murdered tens of thousands of Jews by shooting them or deporting them to the Bełżec extermination camp. The exact circumstances of Jona Fogel’s death are unknown.
