Shalom Shapiro

Shalom Shapiro lebte mit seiner Frau in dem litauischen Dorf Želva. Er war Schneider von Beruf. Ende Juni 1941 marschierte die deutsche Wehrmacht ein. Bald darauf wurde Shalom Shapiro wie alle Juden von Želva in die nächst größere Stadt Ukmergė verschleppt. Im August und September desselben Jahres erschossen Angehörige des SS-Einsatzkommandos 3 unter aktiver Beteiligung litauischer Helfer im nahe gelegenen Wald von Pivonija über 12.000 Juden aus der Region. Unter ihnen befand sich auch Shalom Shapiro.

Shalom Shapiro lived with his wife in the Lithuanian village of Želva. He was a tailor. At the end of June 1941, the German Wehrmacht marched in. It was not long before Leibe Chochem was transported to the nearest large city, Ukmergė, together with the rest of the Jews of Želva. In August and September of that same year, members of the SS Mobile Killing Unit 3, with active help from Lithuanians assistants, shot more than 12,000 Jews from the area in the nearby forest of Pivonija. Among them was Shalom Shapiro.
