Gittel Gelbort

Gittel Gelbort lebte zusammen mit ihrem Mann Hershel und ihren beiden Kindern im polnischen Włodawa. Mit der deutschen Besetzung Polens im September 1939 begann die systematische Enteignung und Verfolgung der rund 6000 Juden der Stadt. Anfang 1941 zwangen die Besatzer die jüdische Bevölkerung von Włodawa in ein Ghetto. Einheiten von Polizei und SS erschossen zahlreiche Menschen vor Ort. Viele deportierten sie in das Vernichtungslager Sobibór, und vergifteten sie mit Motorabgasen. Von Gittel Gelbort fehlt seither jede Spur.

Gittel Gelbort lived with her husband Hershel and their children in the small Polish town of Włodawa. With the German occupation of Poland in September 1939 came the systematic dispossession and persecution of the town’s 6,000 Jews. In early 1941, the occupiers forced the Jews of Włodawa to move into a ghetto. Police and SS units shot many people on the spot. They also deported many to the Sobibor Extermination Camp, where they poisoned them with engine exhaust fumes. No trace of Gittel Gelbort was ever found.
