Ita Kejdel

Ita Kejdel wurde 1929 im damals polnischen Wilna geboren. Bei Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges war die Stadt mit fast 55 000 jüdischen Einwohnern eines der Zentren jüdischen Lebens. Ita war 12 Jahre alt, als im Juni 1941 deutsche Truppen in Wilna einmarschierten. Kurz darauf begannen Angehörige des SS-Einsatzkommandos 9, deutsche Ordnungspolizei sowie litauische Polizisten mit der Ermordung der Wilnaer Juden. Sie trieben ihre Opfer zu einer Baugrube im nahe gelegenen Wald von Ponary und erschossen sie dort. Unter den Ermordeten war auch Ita Kejdel.

Ita Kejdel was born in 1929 in Vilnius, which at the time was part of Poland. At the outbreak of World War II, the city was a centre of Jewish life in Poland, with almost 55,000 Jewish inhabitants. Ita was 12 years old, when German troops entered Vilnius in June 1941. Soon, members of the SS Mobile Killing Squad 9, German Order Police and Lithuanian police commenced with the murder of Vilnius’s Jews. They drove their victims to a construction pit in the nearby forest of Ponary and shot them there. Ita Kejdel was among those murdered.
