Vera Weiss

geboren 1935 in Batyu/Batovo, ermordet 1944 in Auschwitz-Birkenau (VL)

Vera Weiss wurde 1935, als Tochter von Chaim und Lenka Weiss, im slowakischen Batovo geboren. Das Dorf liegt am Fluss Barso in den Kaparten. 1938 musste die Tschechoslowakei das Grenzgebiet an Ungarn abtreten. Der Ort hieß nun Batyu. Als deutsche Truppen 1944 das Land besetzten, deportierten SS-Einsatzkommandos die jüdische Bewohner in das Vernichtungslager Auschwitz. Dort wurden fast alle mit Zyklon B vergiftet, darunter wahrscheinlich auch Vera Weiss. Sie wurde 9 Jahre alt.

Vera Weiss was born to Chaim and Lenka in 1935, in the Slovakian village of Batovo. The village is located on the River Barso in the Carpathian mountains. In 1938 Tschechoslovakia had to cede the border region to Hungary. The village’s name was changed to Batyu. When German troops occupied the country in 1944, SS units deported the Jewish inhabitants to the Auschwitz extermination camp. There almost all of them were poisened with Zyklon B. Vera Weiss was probably among the victims. She was 9 years old.
