Szaja Levant

Szaja Levant wohnte im polnischen Kielce. Die große jüdische Gemeinde dort unterhielt mehrere Bibliotheken und ein kleines Theater. Nach dem Einmarsch der Wehrmacht im September 1939 mussten die Juden in ein Ghetto ziehen. Dort lebten über 25.000 Juden. Innerhalb eines halben Jahres starben etwa 6000 von ihnen an Hunger und Krankheit. Im August 1942 wurde das Ghetto aufgelöst und die verbliebenen Juden in das Vernichtungslager Treblinka deportiert. Die genauen Umstände des Todes von Szaja Levant sind nicht bekannt.

Szaja Levant lived in the Polish town of Kielce. The town’s large Jewish community boasted several libraries and a small theatre. After the Wehrmacht marched into the area in September 1939, the Jews had to move into a ghetto. More than 25,000 Jews were confined there. Within half a year, about 6,000 of them died of hunger and disease. In August 1942 the ghetto was liquidated and the remaining Jews were deported to the Treblinka Extermination Camp. The exact circumstances of Szaja Levant’s death are unknown.
