Laslo Czarny

Laslo Czarny wurde 1890 im österreichisch-ungarischen Neusatz an der Donau geboren. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg fiel die Stadt an Jugoslawien und hieß nun Novi Sad. Etwa 4300 Juden lebten dort Ende der 30er Jahre. Im April 1941 besetzte die mit dem Deutschen Reich verbündete ungarische Armee die Stadt. Als Reaktion auf Überfälle von Partisanen ermordeten die Besatzer Anfang 1942 etwa 800 jüdische Einwohner. Die meisten Überlebenden - darunter Laslo Czarny - wurden im Mai 1944 von SS und ungarischer Polizei in das Vernichtungslager Auschwitz deportiert und dort mit Giftgas ermordet. Laslo Czarny war 53 Jahre alt.

Laslo Czarny was born in 1890 in Neusatz on the river Danube, in the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. After World War I, the town came under Yugoslavian rule and its name was changed to Novi Sad. About 4,300 Jews were living there at the end of the 1930s. In April 1941 the Hungarian army, which was allied with the German Reich, occupied the town. In early 1942, in revenge for a partisan attack, the occupying authorities murdered about 800 Jews living there. Most of the survivors - among them Laslo Czarny - were deported in May 1944 to Auschwitz by SS and Hungarian police, and murdered with poison gas. Laslo Czarny was 53 years old.
