In October 1939 the Wehrmacht occupied the town. 1940 it become a large transit ghetto. In just two days, in August 1942, men from Police Battalion 101 deported more than 10,000 people from the ghetto. Those who were ill and elderly were shot on the spot, the others died in den overcrowded transports or were poisoned with engine exhaust fumes in Treblinka. The exact circumstances of the death of David Waintraub are not known.
