Matilda Chami

Schülerin, geboren 1930 in Bitola/Bitolj/Monastir, ermordet 1943 in Treblinka (VL)

Matilda Chami wurde 1930 in Bitola geboren, einer Kleinstadt im mazedonischen Teil Jugoslawiens. Dort lebte Matilda mit ihren Eltern Sara und Samouel auch, als im April 1941 die bulgarische Armee den Ort besetzte. Juden waren fortan Bürger zweiter Klasse. Anfang 1943 lieferte die bulgarische Regierung auf deutschen Druck hin die mazedonischen Juden an das Deutsche Reich aus. Matilda Chami wurde Ende März 1943 nach Treblinka deportiert und dort kurz nach ihrer Ankunft von der SS mit Motorabgasen vergiftet. Sie war zwölf Jahre alt.

Matilda Chami was born in 1930 in Bitola, a small town in the Macedonian part of Yugoslavia. Matilda was living there with her parents Sara and Samouel when the Bulgarian army occupied the town in April 1941. The Jews were treated as second-class citizens from then on. In early 1943 the Bulgarian government - under pressure from Germany - handed over the Macedonian Jews to the German Reich. Towards the end of March 1943, Matilda Chami was deported to Treblinka where the SS poisoned her with engine exhaust fumes shortly after her arrival. She was twelve years old.
