Ethel Avramovich

Hausfrau ermordet 1944 in Schwarzes Meer (Schiff: Mefkure)

Ethel Avramovich lebte mit ihrem Ehemann Ben-Zion in der rumänischen Stadt Jassy. Mit dem Beginn des deutsch-rumänischen Feldzuges gegen die Sowjetunion verbreiteten rumänische Behörden das Gerücht, dass Juden den kommunistischen Feind unterstützten. Am 29. Juni 1941 eskalierte die Situation in einem Pogrom. Ethel Avramovich floh mit der Familie ihrer Tochter nach Constanta und bestieg dort das Flüchtlingsschiff Mefkure. Die Mefkure wurde nach zweitägiger Fahrt am 5. August 1944 von einem sowjetischen U-Boot torpediert. Ethel Avramovich ertrank im Schwarzen Meer. Sie war 65 Jahre alt.

Ethel Avramovich lived with her husband Ben-Zion in the Romanian city of Jassy. At the start of the German-Romanian campaign against the Soviet Union Romanian authorities spread the rumour that Jews were supporting the communist enemy. On 29 June 1941 the situation escalated into a pogrom. Ethel Avramovich fled with her daughter’s family to Constanta and boarded the refugee ship Mefkure. A Soviet submarine torpedoed the Mefkure on 5 August 1944, after two days at sea. Ethel Avramovich drowned in the Black Sea. She was 65 years old.
