Josef Kohen

Josef Kohen wurde 1930 in der nordrumänischen Stadt Jassy geboren. Seine Eltern waren Liuba und Izhak Kohen. Am 29. Juni 1941 kam es in ihrer Heimatstadt zu einem Pogrom. Josef und seine Familie flohen in die Hafenstadt Constanta. Am 3. August 1944 bestiegen sie das Flüchtlingsschiff Mefkure, das sie nach Palästina bringen sollte. Zwei Tage später wurde die Mefkure von einem sowjetischen U-Boot torpediert. Josef Kohen ertrank im Schwarzen Meer. Er war 14 Jahre alt.

Josef Kohen was born in 1930 in the northern Romanian city of Iaşi. His parents were Liuba and Izhak Kohen. On 29 June 1941 a major pogrom took place in Iaşi. Josef and his family fled to the harbour city of Constanta. On 3 August 1944 they boarded the refugee schooner Mefkure, which was to bring them to Palestine. Two days later, the Mefkure was torpedoed by a Soviet submarine. Josef Kohen drowned in the Black Sea. He was 14 years old.
