Yosef Levy

Yosef Levy wurde 1929 in der nordrumänischen Stadt Jassy geboren. Dort fand am 29. Juni 1941 das bis dahin größte Pogrom Rumäniens statt, bei dem tausende Juden getötet wurden. Liuba Levy, Yosefs Mutter, floh mit ihm und seiner kleineren Schwester Mira in die Hafenstadt Constanta. Am 3. August 1944 bestiegen sie dort das Flüchtlingsschiff Mefkure, das sie nach Palästina bringen sollte. Zwei Tage später torpedierte ein sowjetisches U-Boot die Mefkure und sie sank. Yosef Levy ertrank im Schwarzen Meer. Er war 15 Jahre alt.

Yosef Levy was born in 1929 in the northern Romanian city of Iaşi. On 29 June 1941, the city was the scene of Romania’s largest pogrom to that point; thousands of Jews were murdered. Yosef’‘s mother Liuba fled with him and his little sister Mira to the harbour city of Constanta. On 3 August 1944 they boarded the refugee schooner Mefkure, which was to bring them to Palestine. Two days later, it was hit by a torpedo fired by a Soviet submarine. The schooner sank, and Yosef Levy drowned in the Black Sea. He was 15 years old.
