Gerda Hornik

Gerda Hornik wurde am 8. Mai 1921 in Prag geboren. Die Hauptstadt der neu gegründeten Tschechoslowakei hatte 1930 etwa 35000 jüdische Einwohner. Zahlreiche Synagogen prägten das Stadtbild. Mit dem Einmarsch der Wehrmacht im März 1939 begann die Verfolgung der Prager Juden. Die deutschen Machthaber verschleppten Gerda Hornik im Mai 1942 zunächst in das Konzentrationslager Ravensbrück und im Oktober 1942 weiter in das Vernichtungslager Auschwitz. Wahrscheinlich wurde sie dort kurz nach ihrer Ankunft mit Giftgas ermordet. Gerda Hornik war 21 Jahre alt.

Gerda Hornik was born on 8 May 1921 in Prague. The capital of the newly founded Czechoslovakia had a Jewish population of about 35,000 in 1930. The city was known for its numerous synagogues. After the Wehrmacht took over the area in March 1939 the persecution of the Jews of Prague began. The German authorities deported Gerda Hornik in May 1942, at first to the Ravensbrück concentration camp and then in October 1942 to the Auschwitz extermination camp. She was probably murdered with poison gas there, immediately after her arrival. Gerda Hornik was 21 years old.
