Rachel David

Rachel David wurde 1906 geboren. Sie lebte mit ihrem Mann und zwei Kindern in der griechischen Stadt Ioannina, wo schon seit römischer Zeit Juden lebten. Zu diesen romaniotischen Juden zählte auch die Familie Rachel Davids. Im Herbst 1943 fiel Ioannina unter deutsche Besatzung. Am 25. März 1944 verhafteten SS und Polizei fast die gesamte jüdische Bevölkerung des Ortes, darunter auch Rachel David. Rachel David wurde zunächst in das Konzentrationslager Larissa, dann nach Auschwitz deportiert. Sie überlebte das Vernichtungslager nicht.

Rachel David was born in 1906. She lived with her husband and their two children in the Greek city of Yannina, where Jews had lived since the days of the Roman Empire. Rachel David's family belonged to this Romaniote Jewish community. The German Army occupied Yannina in the autumn of 1943. On 25 March 1944, the SS and police arrested almost the entire Jewish population of the area, including Rachel David. She was deported initially to the concentration camp Larissa, then to Auschwitz. Rachel David did not survive the extermination camp.
