Gracia Akiva

Gracia Akiva lebte im griechischen Saloniki. Ihre Heimatstadt beherbergte die größte sephardische Gemeinde Europas. Im April 1941 marschierte die Wehrmacht ein. Zwei Jahre später begann die planmäßige Deportation der jüdischen Bewohner. Bis Mitte August 1943 organisierte das Berliner Reichssicherheitshauptamt 19 Transporte mit insgesamt 46.000 Juden von Saloniki in die Vernichtungslager Auschwitz-Birkenau und Treblinka. Die SS ermordete dort die meisten Verschleppten sofort nach ihrer Ankunft. Auch Gracia Akiva wurde deportiert. Die genauen Umstände ihres Todes sind nicht bekannt.

Gracia Akiva lived in the Greek city of Saloniki, home to the largest Sephardic community in Europe. In April 1941 the Wehrmacht marched in. Two years later they began the systematic deportation of the Jews. By mid-August 1943 the Berlin-based Reich Security Head Office had organised 19 transports with a total of 46,000 Jews from Saloniki to the extermination camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau and Treblinka. The SS murdered most of the deportees immediately after their arrival at the camps. Gracia Akiva was deported with the others. The exact circumstances of her death are unknown.
